Oh Beth, I am crying, this is so much like my own experience with my girl who was born at home at 31 weeks (weighing just below 1000 g). The midwife put her on my belly and we held her in our hands while the doctor and the midwife tried to get her to breathe which took forever.
She is a healthy and wonderful woman now but at first nobody thought she would make it.

Well, if that's not the way to start off a day, I don't know what is.
I chose homebirth almost forty years ago because in those days, they whisked the baby away from you and took it to the nursery and I could not bear that thought.
Mothers know. Given the opportunity to do what we know in our bones, we do it, and that is the way it's supposed to be.
Thank you, Beth. I love you.
